Summer’s here! And that means it’s time to hit the road on a fantastic summer getaway. Let your friends here at your hometown Homosassa Toyota dealer, Village Toyota, give you a hand with your summer vacation planning. We’ve compiled a list of 10 of the most popular and unique places to visit in Florida this summer. So grab the sunscreen, fill up the cooler, pack your gear, gather the gang, and let’s head out on your best summertime road-trip adventure ever!

Tarpon Springs

Just down the coast in Tarpon Springs where you’ll find a thriving Greek community that will make you feel like you landed smack dab in the middle of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.” Sip some ouzo, enjoy some baklava, dolmades, taramosalata (fish roe dip), pastitsio (baked Greek lasagna), and gyros (pronounced Yi-rose) at Dimitri’s on the Water, a Tarpon Springs favorite. You can also go SCUBA diving off Veteran’s Reef in search of the sponges that drew thousands of Greek immigrants to the area back in the early 1900s.

Kick Back At Cedar Key

Just up the coast is a little gem of a getaway that has a funky vibe all its own. If your goal is to de-stress, relax, and enjoy the warm Florida summer sun, you’ll find Cedar Key a perfect haven of calm and serenity. Jimmy Buffett, who is probably one of the most laid back people on the planet, enjoyed staying in Room 32 at the historic Island Hotel built in 1859. Oh, and you might run into a friendly ghost who likes to kiss people on the cheek when they sleep. While you’re there, be sure to enjoy the natural splendor of the Cedar Key National Wildlife Refuge.

Horse Around In Ocala

You might already know that nearby Ocala is an epicenter for breeding some of the world’s finest thoroughbreds. You can take a relaxing carriage ride past many of the sprawling horse farms or take in the fascinating historical exhibits at the Appleton Museum. Hoist a pint or two and enjoy an authentic English meal at the Horse and Hounds Restaurant & Pub.

Take A Wine-Tasting Tour Of Tampa

If you like your Zin, crave a Cabernet, enjoy musing over a Merlot, or prefer a Pinot Noir, then why not go on a wine-tasting safari in nearby Tampa, Clearwater, and St. Pete. The area boasts 10 outstanding wineries offering an excellent assortment of wines for every palette. For the ultimate wine-tasting experience, head on over to Bern’s Steak House in Tampa which boasts Florida’s largest wine list with more than 6,800 options. Of course, we urge you to please drink responsibly. Use a designated driver or be sure to sober up before you get behind the wheel. After all, a DUI can really ruin a summer getaway in a hurry.

Walt Disney

Walt Disney World is bigger, more exciting, and more spectacular than ever. If you haven’t been to the Magic Kingdom in a while, you’ll find lots of fantastic new things to see and do. The Force Awakens at the new Star Wars experience where you can get up close (well, not too close) with Stormtroopers and many other of your favorite heroes and villains from the Star Wars universe. With four distinct theme parks and so much to do, you may not want to leave. And you can take advantage of outstanding special summer offers and discounts on lodging and park access.

Universal Studios

Can’t get enough of the summertime theme-park experience? Then head on over to Universal Studios Orlando. The Magic Kingdom doesn’t have a monopoly on magic, you know. Not with The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to delight fans of the J.K Rowling’s books and movies. Muggles (non-wizards) of all ages can travel to Hogsmeade at Universal’s Islands of Adventure and Diagon Alley. Or you can experience Skull Island: Reign of Kong or laugh to the uproarious antics Despicable Me Minion Mayhem.

Daytona Beach

Let’s start with a trip to Daytona Beach. Not only is this strand of sun-drenched sand and surf the home of the legendary Daytona 500 at the Daytona International Speedway, but you’ll also find a spectacular assortment of summer fun for the entire family. The area is undergoing a massive $2 billion in renovations and construction, bringing a whole new dimension to this vibrant community. Festivals, amusement parks, fine dining, concerts, watersports, and much more make Daytona Beach a great summertime destination. In fact, Daytona Beach is widely regarded as the “Festival Capital of Florida.”

St. Augustine

Historic St. Augustine should be high on your summer road-trip itinerary. Charming, quaint, and oozing with history at every turn, the country’s oldest city is filled with shopping, dining, and historic sites that promise a memorable summer getaway. There are many excellent restaurants and tours of the area’s many historical places, such as the Fountain of Youth Archeological Park and the Colonial Corner.

Jacksonville

We continue our trek up the eastern Florida coastline to Jacksonville. Jacksonville offers all the amenities of a modern urban city combined with a relaxed and casual approach to enjoying life. Jacksonville locals are warm and welcoming, plus there are some amazing attractions in the vicinity that you shouldn’t miss. Jacksonville boasts 1,200 holes of golf at many top-rated golf courses, a lively nightlife, a burgeoning cultural scene, incredible shopping, the acclaimed Jacksonville Zoo & Gardens, backcountry adventures, and the nation’s largest urban park system with more than 80,000 acres of local, state, and national parks.
