Some of the world’s top automotive engineers, designers, and futurists have been working overtime at Toyota. They’ve been busy crafting the next generation of Toyota models, and one of their most exciting new creations is the unbelievable 2018 C-HR Crossover.
Blasting through convention like a stick of dynamite, the dynamic, dramatic, and ultra-bold 2018 Toyota C-HR (for Coupe High-Rider) recently made an impressive debut on Nov. 17 at the prestigious L.A. Auto Show. All eyes were on Toyota to see if the precedent-setting Scion C-HR crossover concept that had jaws dropping at last year’s L.A. Auto Show would see the light after the transition of the youth-oriented Scion brand to Toyota this past August.
Fortunately for automotive enthusiasts and auto-industry watchers, Toyota did not disappoint as the 2018 C-HR unveiled at this year’s show closely resembles the original avant-garde Scion crossover concept in virtually every respect.
Design Inspired By Diamonds
According to Toyota, the subcompact C-HR’s sleek and athletic design is the result of a unique “Distinctive Diamond” theme developed to evoke the multi-faceted brilliance of this most sought-after gemstone.
As Toyota Division Group VP and General Manager Bill Fay described at the C-HR’s official L.A. unveiling, “The diamond theme permeates throughout. Its silhouette, for example, resembles the iconic gemstone set on its side. Powerful wheel arches and 18-inch aluminum wheels accentuate the posture. Up front, slim projector headlights wrap into its toned shoulders. Deep character lines emerge from the headlamps and lead into the narrower core body. They flow into a unique C-Pillar with a hidden door handle. At the back, you’ll notice the C-HR’s tapered body and 3D tail lights. Its functional spoilers and wings give it a sporty vibe.”
Distinctively Sporty & Chic Interior
The interior of the exhilarating new 2018 C-HR is as bold and distinctive as the exterior. Designed to maximize space for maximum comfort and versatility, the C-HR’s cabin showcases Toyota’s latest thinking, seamlessly margining technology with sporty sophistication.
As Toyota’s Group VP Fay describes it, “The cabin is spacious and chic, with diamond accents found on the soft-touch materials, speaker surrounds, and black headliner.” And, says Fay, the cabin has a low seating position emphasizing the crossover’s low center of gravity. A premium leather steering wheel, cutting-edge Multi-Information Display with G-Force Meter, and an array of impressive high-tech features, including Toyota’s advanced Entune Audio & App Suite™ and a large color touchscreen display will ensure that the C-HR is as modern and up-to-date as its advanced design implies.
Track-proven Performance & Handling
Motivating the new 2018 C-HR is a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine making 144 horsepower and 139 lb.-ft. of torque. A smooth shifting and fuel-efficient Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) directs power to the front wheels, providing an excellent balance of fuel economy and performance. Drivers can engage Sport Mode with manual shift to further accentuate the C-HR’s spirited driving dynamics.
Thanks to Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA), the new C-HR will offer precise and agile handling while achieving a comfortable and quiet ride. The C-HR’s sporty personality was honed on the curves and straightaways of Germany’s legendary Nürburgring, where Toyota’s engineers injected a healthy dose of race-tuned excitement.
According to Motor Trend, Toyota increased the C-HR’s structural rigidity to improve handling. Front Sachs dampers, a large front stabilizer bar, and a new double-wishbone rear suspension with Sachs shock are designed to increase agility and passenger comfort.
The Latest In Technology, Safety, & Convenience
Toyota also announced that the new 2018 C-HR will come with the automaker’s industry-leading Toyota Safety Sense (TSS-P) technology as standard equipment. Toyota Safety Sense P includes such forward-think safety features as automatic braking, pre-collision warning, lane-departure alert, pedestrian detection, dynamic radar cruise control, automatic high beams, and more.
Crafted to appeal to younger, active millennials and professionals, the C-HR will appeal to fashion-forward consumers who make trends, not follow them. It will be offered in two trim levels.
